FAQ

General

What should I expect from my first experience with D-BOX?

Watch a scene for a few minutes and you will feel as if you are drawn into the movie. You will be engaged with the film in a whole new way. You’ll never want to watch movies without motion effects (or MFX).

What are motion effects (or MFX)?

They reflect the movement in what you are seeing. For example, the texture of the road in a car chase or the rumbling of explosions, are all replicated by our motion system. There are 3 types of movements: pitch, roll and heave, which move you forwards and backwards, from side to side and up & down as well as intelligent vibrations.

How does the D-BOX System work?

As with the audio and visual, motion effects are encoded as a separate track on the film creating D-BOX Motion Code. The signal is then sent to a motion controller that will in turn translate the cue and send a signal to your seating.

Are motion effects distracting?

On the contrary. Motion is seamless. It’s an immersive experience. The objective is to make you feel immersed in the action. You won’t think of the mechanics and other distractions around you.

Is D-BOX harmful for children?

It’s completely safe. Common sense dictates that children under the age of 10 should use D-BOX only under parental supervision.

Can motion effects cause motion sickness?

Not at all. We’re all about subtle and refined movements. For your personal comfort, there’s also a control so you can choose between three intensity levels (in all our movie theatres seats and optional with our home theatre products).

How to find out about upcoming movies or games?

You can visit our website, follow us on Twitter or be a fan on Facebook. Upcoming movies are also advertised in select theatres.

How to find a local D-BOX authorized dealer?

You can go on our website right here or contact a D-BOX representative by phone at: 1–888-442-3269.

Will a CAT5 wire work in a D-BOX setup?

Yes it would. Normal Cat5 wire could also work, but we recommend using shielded Cat5 wire.

Are the motion controllers (KAI, MCI or PC3) compatible with all operating systems?

They are currently compatible only with Windows XP, Vista and 7 (32 Bits)

Is it complicated to install a motion system? Can we do it ourselves or does a professional dealer/installer have to do it?

You can easily do the install if you know the basics in electronics. If you wish to have a professional installation, you should contact an authorized dealer.

Home Theatre

Is the purchase of new furniture with D-BOX integrated mandatory or can we keep our furniture?

You can easily slide one of our motion platforms under your existing armchair or loveseat. We have a model that is compatible with almost any seating shape.

Is there a difference in D-BOX quality between a Seating Partner and the motion platform?

No. You will enjoy the same unmatched realistic immersive experience. The same technology is applied in either case.

What are the required elements to have a D-BOX Home Theatre System?

There are 2 solution packages available. First, our Motion Actuator Solutions either through one of our Seating Partners or with our actuator kits. Second, our Motion System Solutions with various models of motion platforms used to retrofit almost any existing seating. With both solutions, you will also need a Motion Controller – available in two models: standalone or PC based and a D-BOX compatible movie.

What models of motion controllers are available?

There are two: standalone and PC-based. Standalone: Series IV model features a hard drive for storing thousands of motion codes for movies. These files are automatically updated if you have an internet connection, so you always have the latest movie titles as they become available. The “Live Update” is programmed to automatically download new motion codes (it must not be used while updating). It will keep in its memory your volume preferences. PC-based: the MCI-2P (2 ports), for up to two D-BOX Seats, or MCI-4P (4 ports), for up to four D-BOX Seats, models are used with a suitably configured Windows PC (XP, Vista or 7 - 32bits). These motion controllers have no hard drive; instead they use the PC's hard drive to store D-BOX Motion Code files. You must manually update the motion code files. Default volume settings will be enabled at start-up.

How is a D-BOX Home Theatre System installed?

First, you need to connect the D-BOX Motion Controller to your Blu-ray or DVD player. Then you connect your motion platform or seating through an RJ45 shielded cable to the motion controller. The motion controller will need access to the Internet via a broadband connection, which can be direct or part of your home network. Once you are set, just insert a movie into your DVD or Blu-ray player. The motion controller kicks in when it recognizes that you have started a movie. If you wish to have a professional installation, you should contact an authorized dealer.

Will D-BOX work if the Playstation 3 is used as a Blu-ray player?

Yes. The D-BOX Motion System is fully compatible with a Playstation 3 used as a Blu-ray player in 5.1 mode (not yet compatible in HDMI mode).

Is it easy to watch a D-BOX movie at home?

Absolutely, all you need to do is insert your movie into your Blu-ray or DVD player and the motion controller will automatically recognize the movie. As easy as that!

Are personal movie collections (DVD or Blu-ray) compatible with D-BOX?

All the titles in our movie library are compatible with existing Blu-ray and DVD movie collections. BD's and DVD's have different motion codes associated with each other. A movie title that is only available on BD won't work in DVD. If you can’t find your catalogue number on our list, please contact us.

Is it possible to synch motion codes to movies from providers such as Apple TV, Tivo, Netflix, etc...?

D-BOX Motion Code is only compatible with original DVD/BD releases. The motion controller needs to recognize the audio signal to synchronize with the movie.

Are all movie versions supported (regular, director's cut, criterion, superbit, etc.)?

It all depends on the audio streams of the movie. For example, if the superbit version has a different audio encoding then the regular one, the motion controller might not recognize it; but if it has the same audio stream, it will work.

Is the rack for the Motion Controller mountable?

Middle Atlantic has built a personalized shelf for the Motion Controller. Part Number is RSH4A3M and it can be purchased directly through them.

How long should the USB cable be for the PC3 or the MCI?

20 feet long.

Gaming

How is a D-BOX Gaming System installed?

The KAI (the gaming motion controller) and the PC game must first be installed on your computer. Follow either the ‘readme’ file included within the KAI installer package, or the single setup compressed file. Ensure you run the setup file directly in the folder where the game is installed.

What is the size of the KAI?

1.75” x 3.25” x 8” (height/depth/width)

For X Flight Simulator, is this motion code compatible with previous versions (i.e. Flight Simulator 2004)?

No it isn't. Previous versions aren't encoded the same way.

What are the KAI’S power requirements?

100vac-240vac, 50/60Hz, 0.3A

There are 4 ports on the back of the KAI-4P, if only 1 is needed for the D-BOX chair or platform, what are the 3 others for?

You can connect up to 3 other D-BOX Seats or platforms if you wish.

Can the home theatre motion controller replace the KAI?

The standalone motion controller and the PC-based motion controller are only to be used with movies, not with video games. For computer games, a KAI is required, connected to a D-BOX Gaming Chair or a Motion Platform, along with a PC and a compatible PC game.
